After the disappointing loss last week, the Blues returned to the JCG for a crack at the top placed Solna Axeman. Needing the win to stay in touch with the finals race, our backs were against the wall. While numbers were slightly down from last week we still had a great turn out and agreed to play a more competitive 12-a-side game.
The blues started slowly in the first, with the strong centre squad of Solna winning it effortlessly in the middle and pushing forward hard. Our back-line was under immediate pressure and did well to limit the Axeman’s scoring. Söder managed to peg one back in the dying minutes through a lovely mark and goal from Mick “the Mighty” Larrson. However Söder were still well down at the end of the first, trailing 26 to 7.
After some encouraging words at the break, the blues effort lifted and we started to work our way back into the game. The middle men starting clicking with Zohan, Wolfman, Doolz and Tommo throwing their weight around and laying some huge bumps, hits and tackles! Things started to look encouraging for the Blues and slowly and surely we started to chip away at Solna’s lead. The half time siren went and Söder were on the front foot, but still trailing by 9 points.
The halftime huddle was buzzing and with Söder smelling blood in the water, we went for the kill at the start of the third. Jake and Macca made Solna look like witches hats at the centre bounces and combined beautifully to work the ball straight down to our forwards. Popping up for a couple each in the term the dynamic duo of Mick & Nick, capitalizing on every opportunity. When Mr Reliable Johnnie Brissles, took an amazing one-on-one mark in the goal square and converted truly, it was definitely looking like Söders day. The siren sounded to the end the third and the Blues had blasted the Axeman away with an 8 goal to 1 term.
Starting the final quarter Solna were intent on not going doing without a fight. The pressure was intense and the mighty back-line of Tunde, Gaz, Brad and the Magnificent Bastard stood tall. Wave after wave of Axemans attacks were repelled and with steady heads and hard run the ball slingshot straight out of the Blues defensive end. With time running low for Solna, they threw caution to the wind, however it was too little too late. Söder ending the day on a high with the final scores, Södermalm Blues 13.10-88 defeating Solna Axeman 9.7-61.
We’d also like to dedicate our win, to our deported champ Dylan, hope to see you back soon mate!
