With the Swedish summer break coming to an end the Boys in Blue returned to Skarpnäck. The first game back was against the Årsta Swans and it provided a good chance to push for the finals. The numbers looked strong with the biggest turn out of the year, in total 20 men pulled on the Söder jumper for the day.
Söder jumped out of the gate and started strong against the Swans but squandered too many opportunities in the first quarter. The Swans then hit back with two late goals at the end of the first which meant Söder went into the break slightly up 17-15.
The second quarter saw the tempo left and the Blues back line came under fierce attack. Gaz, Thunder and Dylan Dylansson all stood up and repelled the ball time after time. Towards the end of the first half we clawed our way back into the game, with Cherry and Mick providing great forward targets and managing to bag a few. Söder went into the half time break with the slimmest of leads, one point.
Starting the third and with the wind behind our backs, Grant “Buckets” Linke worked well with first gamer Tommo and we broke free multiple times in the guts. It wasn’t long and the other first gamer Nick “Kiwi” Law managed to slot one from straight in front and Söder looked to be pushing the game beyond the Swans control. However as in the first, the Swans managed to bag a couple late and stayed within touch, with the boys in blue taking an 11 point lead into the last.
The last started with a bang from Årsta and before we knew it, the Swans had taken the lead within 5 minutes. Despite Söder’s superior numbers, we were simply run off our feet and we could never regain the momentum. In the end a disappointed Söder finished the game with gusto but ultimately not the win. Final scores Årsta Swans 13.6-84 defeating Södermalm Blues 11.9-75
