1. Tough day at the office – Round 2

    By Doolz, 22nd May 2017

For the second round of the year Södermalm Blues lined up against the Solna Axeman at the JCG. The boys were hoping for some redemption after the disappointing first round loss and needed to start strongly. Unfortunately the Axeman got the jump on Söder early and immediately the Blues were on the back foot. Solna continued by kicking three more quick goals when things went from bad to worse, with club legend “Lethal” Larry going down awkwardly in a tackle. Sadly Larry was unable to return to the field then only minutes later Matt “Pres” Barton re-tweaked a hamstring and Söder went two players down in the first quarter.

At the quarter time break the boys were scrambling to re-position and hastily making plans on how to stem the flow of Solna goals. The Söder boys ran hard throughout the second term with Gaz and Mick down back, rebounding the ball time after time. Solna however were able to continue scoring with ease and the half time score was Solna 58 to Söder 9.

With the game all but gone Söder re-evaluated their goals at half time and tried to plan to get the new guys more ball and to play smart possession footy. The start of the second saw a lot of hard run from Calle “Sticks” and Tunde the “Tank”. There was also some great aggression and tackling from Victor. Söder were then able to peg one back with Daniel “Wolfman” drifting forward, taking a great contested mark then kicking truly! It ended up being a great return game for the big-man after a short break of 7 years on the sideline.

Heading into the last Söder were full of positives after going goal for goal in the third. The boys in blue continued to show a fighting spirit and powered on throughout the last and managed to keep the game from blowing out. Ultimately the Axeman were too strong on the day and rightly assumed the title of Premiership favourites. The final score was Solna Axeman 10.23-83 def Södermalm Blues 3.10-28.

Well done to Cherry and his better half for organizing and running the BBQ and thanks to the boys for sticking around and finishing the beers!

Another first game shot gun shout out to Tunde, well done mate!!!

For Söder’s next game we are heading north to Norrtälje to take on the Årsta Swans, let’s hope third time lucky for the Blues!
