1. The Great Comeback! – Round 3

    By Doolz, 22nd May 2017

Hoping to change our fortune after a rough start to the 2017 SAFF season, the Södermalm Blues travelled north to Norrtälje take on Årsta Swans. The Blues headed into the game underdogs with a growing injury list and raft of new players it promised to be an interesting game.

The plan from coach Rappa was to start quickly and get goals early for scoreboard pressure and that’s exactly what happened. The strong centre team of Mick, Wolfman and Doolz were able to get on top right from the start and get a few early ones. There was also a strong presence at full forward with Macca providing a great focal point and Söder looking great early. Årsta however were then able to respond and it promised to be a good game heading into the quarter time break; almost all square.

Söder then again come out strongly to start the second with back to back free kick winning tackles from Calle, who was simply a tackling machine!!!! The boys in blue continued to play smart possession football and started to dominate the game. With the ball deep in the forward line, Jake G roved off a ruck contest and snapped his first ever goal and surely one to remember! Söder continued to dominate throughout the second but couldn’t covert all our shot’s which kept scores pretty close. Then the already short numbered Blues, went one further down with injury when Tanka was slung to the ground late, fracturing his arm. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery mate!! After play restarted Årsta were then able to get two late goals, which managed to put them 2 points ahead going into the long break.

Årsta came out firing after half time and making it worse Daniel “Wolfman” was too injured to make it back on, leaving Söder down to only the 9 men on the field. Söder’s defense were really pushed hard, however Tunde and Gaz continued to win their one-on-one contest’s and the general down back Rundle, dominated throughout taking an incredible amount of intercept marks and rebounding with ease. Söder however were unable to make the most of our opportunities in the Premiership quarter and Årsta got out to a 16 point lead going into the last.

It was a long way back for Söder heading into the final quarter but we came out blasting with Mick dominating in the ruck getting the ball quickly into the strong leading Macca and the Blues starting the last with a bang! Jake G then kicked truly for his second after a 20 metre penalty. Moments later Doolz was able to grab a ball that was smashed 30 metres by Mick in the ruck, and put it straight through. All the momentum was with the Blues and a great come from behind victory was on the card’s! Årsta however weren’t done with quite yet when Youngy ran the entire length of the field to get on to the end of one, which gave Söder a mighty scare. Then after the restart Årsta went straight into attack when Rundle read the play beautifully and was set to mark easily, however an Årsta player decided to channel his inner Eric Cantona and Kung Fu kick Rundle. From the resulting free Söder were able to work it forward with Calle, Victor and then finally Mick getting on the end of it. This put the icing on the cake and the game was ours!

A comeback for the ages and a great upset victory to get Söder back on track for the 2017 season! Great work to each and everyone of the guys who played on the weekend, it was a total team effort and outstanding win! The final score was Södermalm Blues 11.15-81 def Årsta Swans 9.13-67.

Södermalm now has a couple of weeks rest with our next game on the 10th June Vs Norrtälje at the JCG. Hope to see you all there.
